Scottish National Portrait Gallery Reopens
Scotland's National Portrait Gallery has reopened after major refurbishment. Located in one of Edinburgh’s most iconic buildings it provides the opportunity to explore a comprehensive overview of Scotland past and present through a wealth of imagery ranging from the traditional to the contemporary, encompassing painting, photography, sculpture and film.
Students can visit Edinburgh independently - it's an easy train journey from Grantham - or on a trip organised by the Student Development Office next semester.

News from Harlaxton College Library

Harlaxton College Library has just taken delivery of an extensive collection of resources relating to The Beatles. This collection was generously funded by University of Evansville Libraries Wheeler Fund to support Dr Phil Taylor's new course entitled The Beatles: Popular Music and Society in 1960s Britain. As Dr Taylor says, ‘The new Beatles books and CDs for the College Library will be a valuable set of resources for future Harlaxton students and faculty, not just for study of the Beatles but also more broadly for work on popular music, culture and society in 20^th century Britain’.

We were met by a representative from the University’s International Office (an American herself) and taken to an executive suite opposite the Vice Chancellor’s office in the impressive Trent Building. Here Gail Armistead, Head of Study Abroad Programmes, gave us a brief welcome to the University together with a goodie bag of literature each.

Two student ambassadors then led an extensive campus tour which included Trent Building, Dept of Education, Social Sciences, Science buildings, Portland Building (Student Union), a hall of residence and the main Hallward Library.

We ended up at the Lakeside Arts Centre where we had half an hour to view the impressive Lowry exhibition which had conveniently just opened that day.

Guy Fawkes Bonfire

Students and faculty gathered together to celebrate Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night. The fire chased away the rain for us and the hot chocolate kept everyone warm! Students made an amazing effigy of Guy Fawkes to throw onto the fire - looked just like him!

British Empire Afternoon Tea

In keeping with British tradition we had afternoon tea in the splendour of the Great Hall. Itsy, bitsy cakes and sandwiches, proper tea cups and saucers, and of course a certain degree of decorum was adopted throughout the afternoon – very nice.
