Ridgway Scholarship - amazing opportunity

The Ridgway Scholarship provides a unique opportunity for a student normally resident in Lincolnshire or Huntingdonshire, to spend an academic year studying at the University of Evansville. Katie Featherstone is the current Ridgway Scholar, having been selected for the Scholarship earlier in the year. She has now been in America for 2 weeks and has just sent us the following report.

' My name is Katie Featherstone, I am 18 years old and I have been living in and around Grantham for 15 years. I attended local village Primary Schools until I carried on my education at Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School after passing my 11+. I stayed at KGGS, achieving four 'A' levels and one 'AS' which has allows me to study at University of Greenwich on my return. I heard about the Ridgway Scholarship after reading the local newspaper and seeing an article about Chloe Johnson who attended in 2009. I love to travel and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to not only see another country but to experience the life style of an American student.

I was so excited when I received a letter explaining I had won the Scholarship and from that day I started to count down months, weeks and days! I was never really that nervous about coming to America apart from when I was waiting in the departure lounge of the Airport and realised I would not be seeing my family and friends again for another 9 months. Luckily, after my first day in America I was so busy with International Student Orientation and then American Student Orientation that I had very little time to think about missing my family.

I have now been in America for nearly 2 weeks and I love it! I have made many friends from all over the world and now that lessons have started I am starting to experience a completely different lifestyle. Already my confidence, which I have struggled with in the past, has improved and I hope that it will carry on that way. I also hope I will get to see more of America than just Evansville so I will be looking for ways to do this.

This opportunity has been amazing and I am so glad I applied, especially after nearly not turning up to the interview due to nerves. I encourage anyone to apply for the Scholarship next year as I feel like everybody could experience and learn so much from it.'
